GCCC softball gets two run-rule victories

The wind blew. And then it continued to blow even harder.

But no matter how much it did the Garden City Community College softball team took it in stride, dropping Frank Phillips College twice on Saturday, 9-1 and 12-2. Both games ended in the middle of the fifth inning because of the run-rule.

"Wind-wise, this is as bad as its been in quite a few years," GCCC coach Phil Terpstra said. "It got a little chilly, too. Tough condition but the girls did well."

With the wind speed reading up 28 miles per hour, and wind gusts up to 43 through Tangeman Sports Complex, the Lady Broncbusters had little trouble racking up the hits. In the first game Garden City had 13 hits, then 10 in the nightcap. On the defensive side the Busters had few problems keeping Frank Phillips from producing the same kind of offensive stats. Taylor Cange (6-5) continued to improve on the mound for Garden City as she gave up just four hits in the opener. She struck out five and gave up one walk.

Garden City (17-7) broke open a 3-0 lead after two innings and expanded it by six runs in the third. Frank Phillips scored its lone run in the fourth when Lisa Klein crossed home plate.

"We're playing pretty good right now," Terpstra said. "We just hope -- next week we have four conference doubleheaders -- we just hope those things continue. Our defense has probably been our best thing all year. Taylor's pitching is improving every game, and she's pitching very well."

Trisha Haslam, Kayla Jeanjaquet and Tracey Stefanski had two hits apiece in the first game. Stefanski added two RBIs.

In Game 2, the hard wind switched directions, but the Busters produced the same results offensively. The only difference was Frank Phillips was able to have a little more success off of GCCC pitcher Alexa Harvey in the early part of the game. In the third the Lady Plainsmen tied the score at 2-2 when Alyssa Trujillo started in the inning with a double, then Shannon McClenahan followed with an RBI double.

The Busters responded with eight runs on five hits in its half of the third. It started with Harvey, Blair Stalder and Megan Hamilton loading the bases with a single each. All three scored a Sarah Archleta deep hit to right field was dropped by Katelyn Johnson. Jeanjaquet finished the Garden City scoring in the inning with a two-run triple.

Garden City finished with four extra base hits in the game.

"In that second game when the wind changed there were no easy fly balls," Terpstra said. "(Frank Phillips) hit those two doubles and they were just wind blown. There were a lot of tough plays. Anything in the air was just tough. Any throw was tough."

Harvey (11-2) picked up the win by going all five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and she struck out two.

Haslam and Jeanjaquet finished with two hits apiece. Stefanski and Dee Mobley were the only two to not have a hit for the Busters.

The Busters' make-up doubleheader against Colby today at Tangeman Sports Complex has been postponed yet again. No new date has been decided upon.
