Kayla Jeanjaquet was thinking the best she would get was a triple when she rounded first base, but as she approached third Garden City Community College coach Phil Terpstra waved her home. As she crossed home plate safe, her inside-the-park home run had put the final touch to the Lady Broncbusters' score in the first game with two runs scored. And it was just the third inning at Tangeman Sports Comxplex on Tuesday.
"I was thinking I was only going to get a triple," Jeanjaquet said. "Coach was waving me on and I was like "oh, good lord, oh boy."
The fortunate part for Jeanjaquet's home run that went deep off her bat to the opposite side of the field in right past the outstretched reach of Trinidad (Colo.) State's Allyssa Gregory was that it was all Garden City needed. Pitcher Taylor Cange and the defense took care of the rest in the 2-0 win. The Busters ended the doubleheader with a sweep winning the second game 8-6.
"I actually think we played a lot better than the last time we played," Jeanjaquet said of the Busters bouncing from their two losses to Seward on April 15. "I don't know if its because we had a team meeting and we all focused on this game or if we just got lucky."
Garden City (24-12) had lost four of its last six games going into the non-conference doubleheader against Trinidad State and with the team's trip to Colby for a weekend tournament cancelled the Busters held a team meeting Saturday. Whether it was a team unified moment that sparked the Busters as Jeanjaquet said, or whatever it was, Garden City put it together Tuesday.
Cange (10-8) went the distance, giving up just four hits and five walks. She struck out four. On the offensive side, the Busters managed just six hits as Jeanjaquet and Blair Stalder combined for four of them.
"We haven't played for six days so that's a little tough," Terpstra said. "We took four days off of practice to let them relax and maybe get their minds off of some stuff. So you never know how they're going to come back."
The Busters had to fight their way back in the second game as Trinidad scored three runs in the third off pitcher Alexa Harvey to make it a 5-2 game. A run in the bottom of the third, then a two RBI double by Harvey in the fourth evened the score. Jeanjaquet scored two runs with a single in the fifth, then went home on a wild pitch to put Trinidad in a three-run deficit. That was all the Busters needed as the Lady Trojans scored once in the seventh.
Harvey (14-4) picked up the win. She gave up five earned runs on 11 hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
Four Busters had two hits apiece, including Harvey, who also had three RBIs.
Garden City was to be on the road today for a doubleheader at Hutchinson at 3 p.m. in Jayhawk Conference Western Division action.
