The Garden City Community College softball team completed its two-day stay in the Midwest Juco Tournament in Broken Arrow, Okla. with a 4-2 mark.
The Lady Broncbusters opened the tournament Saturday with an 8-5 loss to Maplewood (Mo.), then beat Eastern Oklahoma 12-10 and lost to Labette 8-7. On Sunday, GCCC swept through the competition beating Western Oklahoma 7-2; Coffeyville 12-3 in five innings; and Iowa Western 9-7.
"We started the tournament really sloppy," GCCC coach Phil Terpstra said. "We didn't hit the ball well in that first game and our defense didn't do a good job. After that I thought we did a lot better job of hitting, and I was happy with it after that first game."
GCCC (17-6) committed five errors in its opener against Maplewood. The Busters bounced back, committing just one error against Eastern Oklahoma but was outhit 16-9 despite pulling out the two-run win. Against Labette, the Busters had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh, but with a no-out, bases loaded situation, GCCC went down in order to end the game.
"On Saturday night we had a really interesting conversation," Terpstra said of the team meeting. "After we did that we came out on Sunday and really jumped off to a great start."
In the six games, freshman shortstop Jennifer Buchwalter had 15 RBIs as she batted 11-of-23 (.478) including two home runs. Freshman Brandi Lovato, who was 1-0 on the mound, went 8-for-12 batting on Sunday. Alexa Harvey had 11 RBIs in the two days and catcher Tanna Daley was 5-for-11 at the plate.
GCCC used all four pitchers this weekend — Lovato was joined by Harvey and Lauren Bowler going 1-0, and Jordan Barnett was 1-2. Bowler won her decision in relief against Eastern Oklahoma.
GCCC is on spring break this week and the Busters will begin practice Sunday. GCCC will be home March 24, against Colby for a doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m. at Tangeman Sports Complex.
