The only thing on Garden City Community College men's soccer coach Stephen Gorton's mind after his team's 5-1 win against Lincoln (Ill.) on Sunday was going home and sleeping.
The win concluded a two-day stretch for the Broncbusters in the first Soccer Mom Camp Invitational at Memorial Stadium that started Saturday with a 6-0 victory against Blue River (Mo.) and finished with Sunday's 5-1 win. The Broncbusters earned a well-deserved rest after the second win. Both games were played in the morning with Sunday's game starting at 9.
"The guys started to really get to know each other and play well this weekend," Gorton said. "It was good. Back-to-back, you get to see a lot of things. You get to see how they come out the next day after winning a game, or if they would have lost."
Already off to a 2-0 start before the weekend, Garden City may have served even more of a notice if Gorton believed his team was just starting to play well this weekend. The Busters first win of the season was a 2-0 victory over No. 4 San Jacinto (Texas) in the Barton County tournament.
The Busters perfect record could have been in doubt after the first half Sunday. Lincoln jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when Cesar Nunez drilled a high line drive kick past Busters' goalkeeper Chris Raines.
"I didn't know if it was or wasn't until it happens," Gorton said of whether Lincoln's score would affect his team. It was the first goal to be scored on Garden City this season.
Whether the goal did bother the team, the Busters wouldn't show that it did come the second half. Starting with a Steve Shaw goal in the 53rd minute, Garden City reeled off four more goals. The final score came with just 1:35 left when Daniel Martinez nailed an open shot past Lincoln goalkeeper Nick Vyncke.
"(Lincoln) scored that first goal and we were pretty shocked," Busters forward Fedarico Argreda said. "We just kept our heads up and we were able to see what we are made of."
Argreda scored two of the Busters goals. His first goal put Garden City (4-0) ahead for the first time in the game in the 60th minute.
Lincoln's frustration showed through the second half as the Busters pulled away. At one point, Lincoln had a penalty kick taken away as a foul was called in the line before the attempt was made.
"Yeah, they were pretty frustrated," Argreda said of Lincoln. "They were trying to fight us, kick us. We didn't get into that game. We kept our heads on the field and played our game. We didn't care about what they did."
The tournament, which was a benefit for breast cancer, consisted of a soccer clinic for mothers Friday evening at Memorial Stadium. The Busters wore pink jerseys in both games the Busters played over the weekend. The jerseys were contributed by Joma, the athletic wear company that sponsors Garden City's uniforms.
"Pink's a good color," Argreda said.
No. 13 Barton County also played in the tournament, beating Lincoln on Saturday 3-0 and Blue River 6-1 on Sunday.
