Garden City Community College men's soccer coach Stephen Gorton knows what his team is capable of doing. He said from the start that this team would win a lot of games.
On Monday, though, the second-year coach watched his team beat Kansas City, Kansas, 8-1 in a whole new light. For the first time in the program's four-year history, the Broncbusters went into a game ranked, an honor bestowed on Garden City last week after starting the season 4-0.
The Busters didn't disappoint as they scored their first five goals in a 30-minute span of the first half. Any nervous feeling Gorton had watching his team perform as a No. 10-ranked program went away in a hurry. And it all came after what Gorton assessed as a less than par week of practice.
"To be honest, it was not one of the best weeks of practice," Gorton said. "I had to get on them to pick it up."
Any effect of not playing a game in eight days, or just having a slow week of practice, didn't show against KCK. Alexis Dominguez scored the Busters first goal for Garden City (5-0, 1-0). He finished with three goals in the game with his second and third being the final two goals of the first half. Forward Steve Shaw added two goals, Ulises Caba and Mariano Leo had one goal apiece.
The Busters continue a four-game road trip with a game at Allen County on Saturday, then at Coffeyville on Sunday. Garden City will be at No. 4 Barton County Sept. 24, before returning home to face Johnson County at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 27.
