GCCC knocks off No. 4 San Jacinto

The Garden City Community College men’s soccer team sent a simple message Saturday afternoon on the Barton County soccer field in Great Bend — the Broncbusters have arrived.
It might take the Busters a little more time to prove just how good a team they are, but opening the season with a 2-0 win against the No. 4-ranked team in the nation, San Jacinto (Texas), certainly did something worth taking notice of.
“Before we played I was thinking how for us to go out and beat them is one thing — with them being ranked No. 4 and everything... it’s a big win for us,” Busters head coach Stephen Gorton said. “I think it sends a message. (The team) knows they could be good this year. Now they just have to stay humble and I think they can send a lot of messages.”
Garden City (1-0) was to have played Western Nebraska on Sunday for its final game of the Barton County tournament, but inclement weather prevented Gorton from seeing how his team would respond after starting the season with an impressive win.
“To be honest, I’m real confident in this group of guys,” Gorton said. “To win and to do it the way we did says a lot about them.”
Nine of the 11 starters for Garden City were freshmen, and it was two of the newcomers that caused the most damage to San Jacinto. In the 33rd minute, D.J. Zuniga took a pass from sophomore Alexis Dominguez to score the Busters first goal. Fedarico Agreda added Garden City’s final goal in the 85th minute on an assist from another freshman Ulises Caba.
The Busters kept a constant offensive push on San Jacinto as Garden City finished with 14 total shots to 11 for the Ravens. GCCC sophomore goalkeeper Chris Raines recorded the shutout with four saves.
“It did boost our confidence,” Gorton said of the win. “We wanted to see where we are and now we just have to keep it going.”
Garden City will be off until Sept. 3 for a 7 p.m. game at Jayhawk Conference rival Dodge City.
