Garden City Community College's men's and women's soccer teams swept past the Cowley County Tigers Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
The Lady Busters survived with a 2-1, double-overtime victory while the men unleashed their offense in rolling past the Tigers 7-1. The victory raises the women's season mark over .500 at 7-6-1, while the nationally-ranked men upped their record to 13-1-1.
"All coaches say you've got to play till the final whistle," GCCC women's head coach Jeff Huffman said. "Our team did, and was rewarded."
The Lady Broncbusters played two emotional overtime periods before that final whistle blew. With less than three seconds left in the second overtime, Irma Reyes capitalized on a mistake by Tiger goalkeeper Carly Budd and scored the game-winning, buzzer-beating goal.
"We took advantage of the goalkeeper's mistake," Huffman said. "And we won."
Budd, who allowed only one other goal, tallied five saves and made few mistakes. However, two was enough to allow the Broncbusters to gain the triumph. Sophomore Amalia Marks scored the other Broncbuster goal with 36:23 left in the second half, which took the game into overtime. Amber Hernandez scored the only goal for the Tigers. The Lady Busters will look to continue their six-game winning streak Wednesday against Dodge City at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
"I was really pleased," Huffman said, "We needed to get this win, and if we win Wednesday we're sixth in the region."
The Broncbuster men routed the Tigers, combining for a total of 25 shots and seven goals. The first came with 27:09 left in the first half as Steve Shaw scored the goal. The team did not stop. Scoring goals at 11:45, 8:24, and 2:18, GCCC dominated the game.
"We've been playing well," said men's coach Stephen Gorton.
In fact, since losing to Johnson County on Sept. 27, the men have won six games in a row.
"The competitive aspect has been raised," Gorton said. "Not only by me, but by the team. Mostly, all we have to do is just focus."
With 9:10 left in the second half, Cowley received a small morale boost, when Nick Sobba put the Tigers on the board. The Broncbusters complete Wednesday's doubleheader at home with an 8 p.m. contest.
With only one game left before the first round of the playoffs, GCCC is only one game out of first place in the Region VI standings, behind Barton County.
"Were hoping to win region and make a national tournament appearance," Gorton said.
