The Garden City Community College men's soccer team, ranked 10th, remained unbeaten over the weekend by winning two Jayhawk Conference road games, 2-0, Saturday at Allen County in Iola, then toppled Coffeyville, 3-1, on Sunday. The Lady Busters earned a split in their two weekend outings, falling 1-0 on an overtime penalty kick to Allen County on Saturday. However, they came back on Sunday to earn a 1-0 victory over the host Lady Red Ravens.
The men are now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference while the Lady Busters are 3-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
In the men's Saturday game against Allen County, Fedarico Argreda got an assist from Steve Shaw and fired in his fifth goal of the season to give the Busters a 1-0 lead just 16 minutes into the game. The Busters didn't need any more help from there, but addeda Jose Hernandez goal in the 75th minute. Sophomore goal keeper Chris Raines recorded his third shutout of the season.
On Sunday, the Busters were scoreless going into halftime but came out two minutes into the final period and took a 1-0 Dominguez goal. Coffeyville tied the score at the 56-minute mark but the Busters came back in the 63rd minute to go up 2-1. Alexis Dominguez assisted on the Steve Shaw goal -- his team leading ninth goal of the season. The Busters capped off their scoring at the 88-minute mark when sophomore Daniel Martinez assisted on a Mario Ojeda goal. For the day, the men outshot Coffeyville 23-5, as the Busters put 13 of those shots on goal.
The Lady Busters opened up the soccer weekend with a disappointing and difficult 1-0 overtime loss to Allen County. The Lady Busters outshot Allen County 18-5. Allen County scored the game winning goal via a penalty kick less than five minutes into overtime.
"It was a rough weekend where you were just fighting through to win," said Lady Busters head coach Jeff Huffman. "We didn't play our best but we were in two dogfights. I think the girls are developing the mentality of being like warriors and it is building character."
"It was disappointing to have dominated Allen County but come up on the short end of the score," Huffman said. "Losses are always tougher to swallow when you lose games you should have won and on Saturday that was the case."
The Lady Busters responded on Sunday with a hard fought 1-0 win over Coffeyville. Melvi Ojeda took a throw in from Brittni Jimenez and shot in the winning goal at the 84-minute mark for the Lady Busters first goal in three games. .
"We knew going in that it was going to be a battle-especially since we were playing our second road game in two days," said Huffman. "Coffeyville was very direct in the way they played. We just kept battling and we were rewarded in the end with a much needed victory."
The two teams play Wednesday when they travel to Great Bend to face Barton County in Jayhawk Conference play. The women start at 2 p.m. and the men follow at 4 p.m.
