It took Garden City Community College just one minute, and 30 seconds into the game to score its initial goal, then held on to fend off a pesky Coffeyville Red Raven team 2-1 on Sunday at Memorial Stadium.
"I thought we scored a bunch more but we didn't, but we got the win in cold weather, so it is what it is," GCCC coach Stephen Gorton said. "I'm just happy to win a game."
As the game started with the temperature hovering in the low 30s and ice covering much of the field, the Broncbusters went on the offensive immediately. It paid off when sophomore forward Jamie Villacis spotted midfielder D.J. Zuniga with a cross that Zuniga received and booted a high line drive into the net. From there, the No. 8 ranked Busters continued to show its offensive poise by getting off four shots before Jose Cardenas netted GCCC's second goal with 23:41 to go before halftime.
"We came out here knowing it was going to be cold," Zuniga said. "Coach told us to come out here with intensity and not come out flat, so that's what we did, we came out strong."
The Busters (11-2, 7-1) never allowed the Coffeyville offense to do much in the first 45 minutes. By halftime the Red Ravens had five shots with just one in frame at GCCC goalkeeper Andres Benavides that was saved.
With the GCCC defense preventing Coffeyville from gaining much of any momentum, the Ravens frustration showed at times as three different players received a yellow card. The Busters' Andrew Sincock -- a defensive stopper from England -- who appeared to be the most comfortable in the chilly conditions -- wearing just his shorts and jersey in the first half -- was the only GCCC team member to receive a yellow card.
"Every team is going to come out for us," Zuniga said. "We're ranked in the nation. We're one of the top teams in the nation. Every team we play is going to come out hard on us, so we're expecting that. We just have to be ready."
Coffeyville (5-9, 3-6) pulled within a goal of the Busters with 8:23 when Leonardo Germiniani took a cornerkick from Samuel Souza and scored it past the Busters second goalkeeper Sammy Duque.
With five seconds left, Coffeyville received a free kick from 36 yards out on a GCCC foul. Ryan Richardson booted the ball high into the line in front of the goal. As the ball bounced off the turf, Duque grabbed it to secure the win.
The Busters prepare now for the much anticipated Jayhawk Conference clash against No. 10 Barton County on Wednesday. The game will start at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
"Wednesday's a huge game," Zuniga said. "That team is one of our rivals. We all know its going to be a tough game, so we have to come out hard and give the best game we have."
