Garden City Community College men's soccer coach Stephen Gorton received a call from one of his players around 7 p.m. Tuesday.
It was sophomore forward Steve Shaw informing the Busters second-year head coach that the NJCAA Division I rankings were out, and Garden City is No. 10 in the new poll. It is the program's first ranking in its four-year existence.
"We're really excited about it," Gorton said. "There's 137 teams at the Division I level, and to be recognized like this is really nice."
Garden City (4-0) moved into the rankings after a weekend performance when the Busters knocked off Blue River (Mo.) and Lincoln (Ill.) College in the Soccer Mom Camp Invitational at Memorial Stadium. The goal Garden City gave up Sunday to Lincoln was the first one allowed by the Buster defense this year.
The Broncbusters started the season with a 2-0 win over San Jacinto (Texas) College-South, which was ranked No. 4 at the time and is ranked No. 8 in the latest poll.
Yavapai College (6-0) in Prescott, Ariz. held on to its top spot, and Jayhawk Conference rival Barton County (4-0) is ranked fourth.
"I kind of want to see how we're going to react to this," Gorton said. "It will be interesting to see how the guys come out."
