It's back to the norm for the Garden City Community College men's soccer team and the Broncbusters are feeling fine.
On a rare Friday night game at Memorial Stadium, the No. 11-ranked Broncbusters disposed of Jayhawk Conference foe Allen County 4-0, marking its second straight shutout in three days. GCCC (8-1, 4-0) beat Cowley College on Wednesday, 3-0.
"Defensively, we've been working pretty hard so we're excited to get our second straight shutout," GCCC coach Stephen Gorton said. "It's a nice win at home again. The guys came out excited and we played well."
Just six days after GCCC suffered its first loss, a 4-3 overtime loss at Northern Oklahoma, the Busters have plenty of reason to feel good. Like they did on Wednesday, Garden City's defense dominated the opposition. In fact, the Busters limited Allen County (2-6-1. 1-4-1) to just four shots. Two of them coming in the closing minutes of the game when many of the Buster reserves were inserted.
"It was good," GCCC sophomore forward Tareq Al-Lugman sald. "The team's playing good, we're passing the ball good -- that's why they're not scoring. As long as we keep tying it all together we're going to be good."
The 2007 Jayhawk Conference and Region 6 freshman of the year, Al-Lugman sat out all of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Gorton has gradually brought Al-Lugman along this season and he received his most extensive playing time Friday. He finished the game with two assists, connecting with freshman forward Whitney Browne in the first half, then with Federico Agreda 10 minutes into the second period.
"He's getting more and more time and being more active," Gorton said of Al-Lugman. "That's the key for him, just stay active and run as much as he can and for as long as he can while he's in there. It's a lot of mental stuff."
The Busters came out against Allen County a lot like they did against Cowley on Wednesday. Putting the offensive pressure on the Red Devils early, the Busters had 12 shots before halftime, then added seven more in the second half.
GCCC scored its first goal 14 minutes into the game when sophomore midfielder D.J. Zuniga broke ahead of the defense on a pass from forward Frank Tayou and Zuniga shot a goal past the Red Devils' Zack Hanks. Sophomore forward Jamie Villacis scored the second goal on a 25-yard line drive into the right side upper corner at the 11:45 mark of the first half.
"I think it's more exciting (for the team) to play on a Friday night," Gorton said. "It means a weekend of no games, so I think they like it a lot more."
The shutout was the fourth for GCCC this season and the Busters reamined on top of the conference standings. The Busters will have almost a week off before playing again as they will step out of the conference and travel to Hesston College next Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. game.
