Through 19 games and six Jayhawk Conference Western Division match-ups, Garden City Community College men's basketball coach Kris Baumann would be the first to tell you how much this season has been a disappointment. Game 20 on Sunday at Perryman Athletic Complex didn't make it any better as the Cloud County dropped the Broncbusters, 58-48.
In a season following its run to a sixth-place finish in the NJCAA national tournament, Garden City (10-10, 1-5) has played like a far memory from that team. Against Cloud County, the Busters showed why. GCCC jumped on the Thunderbirds early with a 7-0 lead on a Eric Griffin layin on a pass from Bobby Wesley. Cloud County (10-9, 3-3) responded with a 9-2 run, then led 27-24 at halftime on a short hook shot by Tywuane Modupe with one second left.
"It was a really poor effort I thought," Baumann said. "I thought we came out strong. We were up 7-0 to start, we looked good. I thought 'OK,' then -- I don't know, we just have some guys that don't have obviously a lot of pride about themselves or about how they play the game. We had some guys that just laid an egg today that are suppose to be good players."
By the time it was over and Cloud County escaped, the Busters finished with just a 31.4 percent (16-of-51) shooting performance from the floor. But with all that went wrong for GCCC, they still had plenty of chances to pull away with a win. An Avery Jirmnson putback gave GCCC a 36-34 lead, then Travis Burley made it a four-point advantage with a layup. Even after the Thunderbirds came back to take the lead by four, the Busters were within 49-47 with 40.7 seconds showing. Cloud County hit all nine free throw attempts then, including three by Eric Ray after he was fouled by Jirmnson on a 3-point attempt.
"To come in to Garden City and get a win is always good," Thunderbirds coach Kevin Muff said. "Last year, I thought we played Garden about as good as anybody we played all year and ended up on the losing end both times. So coming in here, our sophomores feel good about getting a win. That was tough losing both last year in one-point games."
The win in Garden City was the first for Cloud County in three years.
After seven points early in the game, GCCC leading scorer sophomore guard Chris McHenry scored just two more points on a pair of second half free throws. Wesley was the lone Buster to score in double figures with 13 points. Burley was the only one off the bench to score, as he had six.
Modupe paced Cloud County with 15 points. He was followed by Eric Marshall with 13, and Ray had 11.
"At one point (this season) we could score 48 points in a half," Baumann said. "Now, it's really, really bad. I just don't know. I've tried a lot of different things, but at some point guys have to show up and play... Right now we don't take it real serious."
The Busters will be on the road Wednesday at Seward County. The game tips-off at 8 p.m.
GCCC notes: Freshman reserve post player Ronald Cobb was "dismissed from the team" Baumann said after the Busters overtime loss at Pratt on Wednesday. He had been dismissed the day before the game. Cobb played in 15 games, averaging 3.7 points and 3.1 rebounds. Cobb's removal from the team leaves GCCC with just one true post in sophomore Martel Jackson.
