With a chest bump and a 10-point lead Garden City Community College guards Corey Claitt and Jordan Ragan enjoyed what has been missing.
The feeling closing in on a win.
By putting together a second half stretch when Hutchinson was held without a field goal for more than eight minutes, the Broncbusters ran away with the Jayhawk Conference West Division game Wednesday at Perryman Athletic Complex 78-61.
"We had to bring it," Claitt said. "We were playing the number one team in the conference."
The Busters did bring it against the Blue Dragons, and Claitt led the charge.
The Garden City guard poured in 28 points on a 12-of-22 performance from the floor. Eight of nine Busters scored.
"I thought Corey got us off to a great start," Garden City coach Kris Baumann said. "The margin of error isn't as great as it once was, but if you execute the game plan and take care of the ball you give yourself a chance to win."
Focused from the opening tip, Garden City (18-10, 7-8) matched the Blue Dragons step for step. The largest lead Hutchinson (21-8, 11-4) ever had was five, the first time one being 7-2. It was the only time Hutchinson had much control. Something Garden City hasn't been able to have much of lately as the win ended a four-game losing streak.
Garden City had an answer to everything the Dragons threw at them. Even Bobby Maze, the Dragons conference player of the year candidate, couldn't get much going against Garden City. The third leading single-season assist leader in Hutchinson history, Maze dished out just one assist.
"He might be the player of the year in the conference and we had a good game plan," Claitt said of dealing with Maze. "We executed it. We wanted everyone to know he wasn't going to come in here and take over. We had to show everyone he could be stopped."
After giving up a 3-pointer to Maze that knotted the score at 54-54, Garden City never trailed again. It was at that point the Busters shut the Hutchinson offense. It was an eight minute stretch before Maze hit another 3-pointer with 45 seconds left, which was the Dragons first field goal since his trey that tied the game.
"I thought our focus level was there," Baumann said. "It's been there in practice and it carries over into the games. I was really happy with the guys. They've been hurting, struggling with this four game slide."
Along with Claitt's 28 points, Trevor Ottley dropped in 12 for the Busters and Ragan added 10.
Maze was one of two Dragons to score in double-figures as he had 17 points. Abdul Herrera scored 14.
The Busters will close out the regular season Saturday at home against Dodge City. The game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
Garden City will be without forward Tim Brown for the remainder of the season. Brown was dismissed from the team for conduct detrimental to the team, Baumann said.
