Coming off a pair of tournaments on the road, the Garden City Community College men's and women's basketball teams will be home this weekend for the Pepsi Classic. It will be one of two tournaments the Broncbusters host before semester break.

"I'm really excited," first-year GCCC women's coach Alaura Sharp said of playing in the home tournament. "With the energy we had in the scrimmage against Otero (preseason), I'm predicting that we come out with that same type of energy. We played well that night. We're hoping to get some of that same energy that we really lacked playing on the road this last weekend."

The Lady Broncbusters are coming off a 1-1 performance in the Seward County Classic in Liberal. They lost their opener to New Mexico Junior College (67-56) but trailed by only three points with just over two minutes left in the game. They came back on Saturday to give Sharp her first GCCC victory, a 65-45 triumph over Hesston College.

The men enter the tournament with already one game on their home court, a season-opening 76-68 win over McCook, Neb. They were 2-0 over the weekend at the Ambassador Classic in Colby, defeating the Northwest Kansas All-Stars and Trinidad (Colo). State.

The tournament will be a three-day event starting Thursday. There will be four teams playing on both the men's and the women's sides. The Lady Broncbusters will play their games at 5:30 p.m. each night, and the men follow at 7:30.

Eastern Oklahoma and Howard women will start the tournament Thursday at 1:30 p.m. GCCC will play the Sterling Junior Varsity at in the women's game, then the men play the Colorado Kings. On Friday, the Lady Broncbusters play Howard, and the men take on New Mexico Junior College, whose coach, Chris Tifft, led Lamar (Colo.) to a win against GCCC in the fifth place game of the NJCAA national tournament last season. The Lady Busters finish the tournament Saturday against Eastern Oklahoma, then the men play North Platte.
