It’s not that Lucas Aslin would prefer to practice in the hot conditions usually normal in the early half of the football season.
But, if the Garden City Community College Broncbusters are going to be prepared for the expected hot weather when they open their season in seven days in Cisco, Texas, Aslin would just as well have his team practicing in it.
“I’m sure the kids aren’t big fans of it, but we need it — we need the heat,” said Aslin, the Busters’ second-year head coach. “One of my buddies is (offensive coordinator) in Cisco, and it’s been cool down there too.”
The second-year head coach had his wish in the last half of the week as temperatures were higher than Monday through Wednesday. Now, the Busters will have a chance to showcase a little of what it has been they’ve worked on in the first three weeks at the Brown and Gold scrimmage tonight at Memorial Stadium. The scrimmage will start at 7:30 p.m.
“We’re going to be a little more basic than a normal game would be,” Aslin said. “We’re just going to try and polish some of the things we should be good at by now.”
Keeping it fairly vanilla and using plays everyone is guaranteed to see this season, Aslin said, is what the crowd should expect to see. There’s much more to the offensive scheme the Buster coaching staff has inserted this season, but tonight wouldn’t be the right time to show it.
“(Today) it’s going to be set up like it’s a pre-game,” Aslin said. “We’re going to have a pre-game meal. We’re going to get them all over and meet like we would for a pre-game. It’s just kind of like a set-up to what we’ll do next week.”
Garden City, who in the preseason coaches poll is ranked No. 9, has just three returning starters back on the both sides of the ball. Tonight the Busters returners will have the chance to be featured in front of the home audience for the first time. Sophomores quarterback Eugene Smith (6-3, 205, Pensacola, Fla.) and wide receiver Cameron Kenney (6-2, 195, Dacula, Ga.) highlight the offense along with massive lineman Kirt Nichols (6-8, 300), who has had to take the leadership role with four new starters playing along side him. Defensive lineman Brett Spresser (6-3, 275) leads the group of returning starters on the other side of the ball. He is joined by linebacker Aaron Anderson (6-3, 240) and Hiram Atwater (5-11, 205) at safety.
