With no time left on the clock, Garden City Community College quarterback Ryan Howard launched a pass into the end zone. On the receiving end Avonte Jones came down with the ball and a meaningless touchdown by the outcome of the game standards.
Third-year Broncbusters' head coach Lucas Aslin said earlier this week he was 'scared to death' with his team playing a Friday afternoon game in the high altitude of Colorado Springs, Colo. (6,000 feet elevation) where Air Force Prep is located. The Huskies proved why Aslin was uneasy as Air Force Prep produced a 20-13 victory over the Busters.
"We didn't play very well," Aslin said. "It was just not a good team effort. We weren't ready to play and I have to take blame for that, too. It just wasn't a good effort by the majority of the team."
Garden City had its chances to score throughout the game, but turnovers were an on going problem. After the Busters opened the game on a high note when Howard connected with sophomore receiver Cameron Horesky on a 49-yard touchdown pass on the first possession of the game, the Husky defense clamped down. The Busters' offense sputtered most of the rest of the game.
Howard threw two interceptions in the game with the first being on the Busters' first possession of the second half and it was in the end zone. Had GCCC scored, it would have given them at least a three-point lead after Air Force Prep scored a touchdown and a field goal in the second quarter to lead at halftime 10-7.
"That first possession of the second half meant a lot to us," Aslin said. "We wanted to come out and prove we could drive right down and score. That interception took a lot out of us."
The Busters struggled to stop the Huskies option attack as they finished with 249 yards on the ground. With 46 second left in the third quarter, Ryan Young provided the most damaging run against the GCCC defense as he scampered for a 20-yard score to put the Huskies up 17-7. In the fourth quarter, Bryson Canada booted a 47-yard field goal with 12:11 to go for Air Force Prep to increase the lead to 20-7.
The Busters finished with 319 total yards of offense. Howard passed for 237. His 28-yard touchdown strike to Jones at the end of the game concluded an 84-yard drive that started with 1:02 left.
Garden City sophomore running back Chase Bieberle paced the team on the ground with 48 yards on 15 carries. Horesky had six catches for 105 yards. Jones had three catches for 89 yards.
The Busters, ranked No. 22, will have an extra day to prepare for top-ranked Butler on Sept. 12 as the two will clash at Cessna Stadium in Wichita. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
