The Broncbusters took it for what it was Saturday night at Memorial Stadium -- a win.
At the same time, Garden City Community College second-year head coach Lucas Aslin couldn't help but point out what didn't go right in its 30-7 victory against Air Force Prep.
"We just didn't put points on the board like we need to put on," Aslin said. "It could have been a lot different game if we would have put some points on the board early. We didn't execute like we need to when we get down inside the 20 and 30. That's our fault and we have to do a better job next week and I know we will."
What lies ahead for the Busters is a Jayhawk Conference clash at No. 12 Fort Scott on Saturday. Garden City, ranked 14th, has lost four straight to the Greyhounds, who beat the Busters twice last season. The win over Air Force Prep was nice for Garden City, but still the Busters noticed things have been better.
"We came out shaky," running back Ryan Smith said, "but we knew we just had to do our job on offense and execute. We left a lot of points off the board. As an offensive unit we know we're going to have to play better next week than what we did tonight if we're going to win."
Smith and backfield running mate Chase Beiberle were two bright spots in a sometimes lackadaisacal offense. Garden City (2-1) ran up 288 yards on the ground and with the yards added through the air, the Busters finished with 486. Still, no one was willing to overlook what could have been.
"The plan was to come out and be full steam ahead," quarterback Eugene Smith said. "But we kept on making mental mistakes -- they kept slowing us down."
The Busters had the ball inside the Husky 20 on their first two possessions, but both times ended with a turnover. The first one was an interception by Air Force Prep's Justin Cureton on a Eugene Smith pass into the end zone trying to connect with Cameron Kenney. The second possession was stopped when Kenney fumbled on a reception at the 6. The turnover stopped a drive that started at the Busters 24 and included a 58-yard run by Ryan Smith.
"Playing against one of the top teams last week (Butler) and then coming in here, we tried to dog fight," Ryan Smith said. "People may have overplayed, but we had to lock in, lock it down. The defense did great in stopping them."
The Busters defense prevented the Huskies from being the third straight team to score on their first two possessions of the game.
"We did a good job except for one drive, we didn't do a very good job on," Aslin said of the Busters defense. "We worked hard on that all week. The misdirection boot stuff they did, the tight end dump stuff. We did a good job containing it."
The defense's only letdown Aslin referred to was Air Force Prep's lone touchdown. A 60-yard drive that took 14 plays and consisted of converting two fourth downs. Husky quarterback Mikel Whittier scored the team's touchdown when he dashed into the end zone from eight yards out to make it 27-7 with 3:40 left in the third quarter. Outside of that drive, the Buster defense never allowed Air Force Prep to have much.
The Garden City rushing attack, which had been suspect in the first two games, did finallt break out. Ryan Smith ran for 105 yards on just six carries. He scored one touchdown on a 10-yard burst through the middle at the 11:08 mark of the third quarter. Beiberle, who was held to one yard on two carries in the first half, busted loose for a 68-yard run and scored three minutes after Smith's touchdown run.
"I love it ¬-- get them the ball, let them do what they do," Eugene Smith said of the running back duo. "They're some good running backs. They hit the hole and took it to the house. They took care of it tonight."
Eugene Smith had plenty to show running as well. He finished with 76 yards rushing on 12 carries. He was also able to show why he was so efficient a week earlier when he passed for 395 yards against Butler. Smith connected with Adrian Jones for a 39-yard touchdown to open the Busters scoring in the first quarter, then in the second quarter he connected with Kenney for a 44-yard touchdown pass.
Garden City's final points came in the fourth quarter when Kenney, who had lost two fumbles in the game, booted a 52-yard field goal with 6:32 left.
The Busters game at Fort Scott starts at 7 p.m.
