The Garden City Community College women's soccer team did what it wanted to Wednesday -- win.
And the Lady Broncbusters did it in convincing fashion, winning 5-1 over Hesston College in Hesston.
Garden City (1-0) outshot the Larks 40-4 on a night five team records were broken. The 40 shots is a record, along with most shots on goal (22), most corner kicks (nine), fewest shots allowed by an opponent, and fewest shots on goal (three). The Busters also tied a team record of five goals in a game.
"I could not have expected a better effort from the girls, considering it was our first game of the season and the fact we had been on a bus for four hours," GCCC head coach Jeff Huffman said. "I asked the girls from the beginning to attack their goal and keep the pressure on their backline, which they did. I was extremely pleased that when we got down by a goal we responded in a positive manner and kept the pressure up."
Melvi Ojeda, who battled a hip flexor injury through most of last season, did the most damage for the Busters as she scored three goals. The leading scorer from last season, Mary Jones, added the other two goals.
Jones, Kayla Pina, Taylor Eason and Ashley Crowley each had an assist for the Busters.
