Before he leaves his athletic director duties at Garden City Community College to take on the same position at Newman University in Wichita, Vic Trilli has one more task.
As he leaves Garden City at the start of his seventh year at the college, he felt it was necessary to do one last helpful thing. Trilli will spend Saturday doing what he loves to do -- be an administrator during a hectic time. And with Jayhawk Conference and defending national champion Butler County coming to down for a football game, there may not be a better time for the college to have someone like Trilli around. Garden City will not just be host to the Grizzlies, but they will also have a television crew on hand. The statewide channel, Kansas Now, will be televising the game live, on channel 22.
"We haven't had this much excitement in a long time," Trilli said. "There's been a lot of work put into this to prepare. What a tremendous opportunity it is for us to be able to showcase Garden City to people around the state." An idea to broadcast the game was brought to GCCC about three weeks ago Trilli said. From there, the idea was formed into a plan and it was developed to allow Garden City the chance to have the game broadcast at Memorial Stadium. Mark Ewing from Topeka will be one of the broadcasters for Kansas Now. Making the arrangements for everything to be set up has been a challenge Trilli said, but the help the college has received has been positive. Trilli pointed to the support the college received from the Garden City school district 457 has been tremendous.
"USD 457 had to make all these arrangements and they did a great job," Trilli said. "That's what I love about getting to work with people like (GCHS athletic director) Bill Weatherly. They all gave such a tremendous effort."
The televised game, which kicks off at 7 p.m., will be a first since Trilli started at the college seven years ago. Trilli believes it might even be the first time Garden City has had a chance to be showcased in a game on its home field.
Along with the television hoopla, GCCC will have a tailgate party before the game from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on the north side of the stadium. Trilli said anyone who would like to attend just needs to show their ticket and students can show their college ID. The tailgate is sponsored by the Broncbuster Athletic Association, Great Western Dining and KIUL radio.
The football game will be Trilli's final event as the athletic director. Assistant athletic director Bob Larsen will move into Trilli's position on an interim basis.
"It's been a lot of work," Trilli said. "When the lights are shut off at the stadium I'm out. It's been nothing but an honor to have come out here and work. This is a special game for me."
