LIBERAL -- If you wanted to know how things have been going lately for the Garden City Broncbusters and the Seward County Saints, a sequence of events late in their game Saturday night summed it up.

With less than two minutes remaining, and Garden City having trimmed a 17-point deficit to seven, 57-50, the Busters still had a glimmer of hope.

But Garden City's Jordan Ragan tried to penetrate and kick a pass out for a 3-pointer that could have made it a two-possession game, the errant pass went off a teammate's hand and out of bounds.

Then, with the shot clock winding down on Seward County's ensuing possession, the Saints Darko Cohadarevic banked in a 3-pointer from about 25 feet out to give the Saints a 60-50 lead with 1:16 remaining.

Seward County held on for a 60-52 home win, its 10th in 11 games. Garden City, meanwhile, dropped its fourth-straight game.

"When you lose three in a row, things like that start happening to you," Garden City coach Kris Baumann said about the series of the events at the end of the game.

But Baumann and the Busters know they might not have been in that situation had they taken care of business -- or at least the ball -- earlier in the game.

The Busters (17-10, 6-8 in the Jayhawk West) committed 29 turnovers and put themselves in a hole in the second half by letting the Saints (23-5, 11-3) reel off a pair of 10-0 runs.

"Twenty-nine turnovers," Baumann said, shaking his head. "You can't win conference games with 29 turnovers."

Ragan hit the first of his three 3-pointers in the opening minute of the second half to tie the game at 29. But Cohadarevic and Nick Burns responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to spark the first 10-0 run as the Saints built a 39-29 lead with 14:08 remaining.

Another Ragan 3-pointer and a free throw by Tyrone Flemming pulled the Busters within 45-38 with 9:46 remaining, but the second 10-0 run by the Saints gave them take their biggest lead, 55-38, with 6:54 remaining.

"We were really careless," Baumann said about the Busters' 15 first-half turnovers. "In the second half, I thought they kind of turned up the heat on us, and we didn't handle it very well."

But the Busters weren't done. Ragan, who finished with 11 points, hit his third 3-pointer of the half and Corey Claitt got a steal and layup in a 9-0 run that pulled the Busters within eight, 55-47, with 4:55 remaining.

Ervin Williams scored inside for the Saints, but Claitt drilled a contested 3-pointer on the other end to make the score 57-50 with 2:13 remaining.

A Seward County turnover gave the ball back to the Busters, but the turnover and Cohadarevic's bank shot dashed their hopes.

Baumann didn't fault his team's effort as the Busters stayed close to the Saints early and rallied down the stretch. But, as he put it, "Our margin of error isn't very large."

Claitt scored 17 points for the Busters, who out-rebounded the Saints 38-28.

Cohadarevic and Burns scored 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Saints, who hit 10-of-22 3-pointers.

"They're good," Baumann said. "I knew we were going to have to play outstanding to have a chance to win tonight."

The Busters are back in action Wednesday night as they host Hutchinson (21-7, 11-3), which lost at Barton County Saturday night to fall back into a first-place tie with Seward County.
