The freshman group from Florida tried its best to give the Garden City Community College men's soccer team at least a third-place finish at the NJCAA Division I National Championship on Sunday in Phoenix Arizona.
Unfortunately, the Broncbusters came up short to Mercer (N.J.) 5-4.
The Busters fell behind early as Mercer scored the first two goals of the game in the 20th and 29th minute. Ulises Caba, a freshman from Guymon, Okla, put GCCC on the board at the 45-minute mark on a pass from Florida freshman Fedarico Argreda.
Halftime didn't help the Broncbusters as Mercer put up two goals out of the break to go up 4-1. Garden City rallied late with another goal by Caba in the 71st minute.
After Mercer's fifth goal six minutes following Caba's second goal of the game, Argreda got a goal of his own at the 79 minute mark. Fellow Florida freshman Jose Cardenas scored the Broncbusters' final goal of the tournament in the 82nd minute.
GCCC goalkeeper Chris Raines had eight saves in his final game in net for the Busters.
The fourth-place finish is Garden City's best finish in the program's four-year history. The Broncbusters finish the season with a 19-3-1 record.
