A strong weekend for the Garden City Community College soccer teams was capped off Sunday morning with a barrage of goals.

After the men's and women's soccer teams disposed of Hesston on Saturday, both by a score of 2-0, the Broncbusters swept Independence on Sunday.

First, the women's team took down Independence 4-1 before their male counterparts put up a dozen goals in a 12-0 romp of Independence.

"It wasn't pretty. No one would admit that our wins this weekend were pretty," women's coach Jeff Huffman said. "But at the end of the day, it's all about getting the wins, especially for us. We had only one Region VI win coming into this weekend, and now we leave with three. We've tripled our win total."

The women's team started off strong against Independence when Kayla Pina set up Marissa Castillo just 10 minutes into the game. Later in the first half, Melvi Ojeda scored an unassisted goal.

After holding a 2-0 halftime lead, Castillo scored her second goal of the game and her third of the weekend off a pass from Mary Jones. Pina got a goal of her own with just less than 10 minutes left in the game when she put away a Kristen Huffman pass.

"Honestly, it should have been worse," Huffman said. "We had way more opportunities than they did. In both games, we were definitely the better team. We dominated the games, but we'll take wins any way we can."

Fedarico Argreda got the men, who currently are ranked No. 11 in the NJCAA poll, going early against Independence when he put away a pass from Mariano Leo just more than two minutes into the game. It would be nearly 25 minutes before the Busters would score again, with Jose Cardenas scoring on a pass through the box by Mario Ojeda.

GCCC scored three more goals before halftime thanks to the passing skills of Alexis Dominguez. Dominguez collected an assist on three goals starting with goals by Ojeda and Cardenas within just one minute of each other. Ulises Caba was at the receiving end of Dominguez's pass with just less than three minutes before the break.

"We have a good team, and we know we can finish," Dominguez said. "And we did that today."

It took little time for Garden City to come out of halftime scoring. Steve Shaw followed up a save by the Independence goalkeeper to score the Busters' sixth goal just five minutes into the second half.

Shaw was involved in the next two goals, as well. First, he hooked up with D.J. Zuniga 10 minutes following the first goal of the half, then Shaw scored his second goal of the game from an assist by Daniel Martinez with more than 23 minutes remaining.

"We just started finishing," Shaw said. "(Saturday) it was unlucky and the keeper had a lot of saves, and today we finally capitalized on our attacks and put it in the back of the net."

Shaw unfortunately would come out after his second goal when he re-aggravated a lingering shoulder injury.

"It can't get any worse," Shaw said following the game. "The pain just comes back. Like right now I can't even feel it again. I think I'll be good again. Hopefully I don't hurt it again."

Argreda got another goal with 14 minutes left in the game off a pass from Zuniga. Juan Lopez scored four minutes later on a free kick from just outside the box.

Cardenas earned a hat trick with just more than a minute to go in the game when he buried a block by the goalkeeper off a shot by Jamie Rodriguez. With less than 30 seconds remaining, Samuel Andrade scored goal No. 12 for the Broncbusters.

"Since about three games back, we just have been creating a bunch of opportunities and they just haven't been going in," men's coach Stephen Gorton said. "You don't really want to crush anybody, make anybody feel bad, but we really needed a bunch of goals today. It was good to get them."
