It wasn't the best start for the Garden City Community College rodeo team Sept. 12-14 at Colby County Community College. In its first of three rodeos for fall season, GCCC had just three competitors make the final round at Colby as the men finished 14th overall with the women taking 10th-place.
"Hopefully, we'll relax and learn to just go in and compete," coach Jim Boy Hash said.
On the women's side of the roster, Jennifer Sherman, made the short go in breakaway roping by splitting fourth place in the long go with three other riders. However, she finished only 10th in the average, after missing her calf in the short go.
Stephanie Lindsay, tied for 10th in goat tying during the long go -- a position she shared with four other competitors -- and then took sixth in the short go to earn sixth in the average.
In men's competition, GCCC bull rider Zack Parkin finished fifth in the average for bull riding, after making the final round by earning fifth in the long go. He was bucked off in the short go, however, along with every other bull rider.
Most Central Plains Region rodeos on the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association circuit include Friday and Saturday night performances, each called a "long go," followed by a championship round on Sunday, called the "short go," for top contenders from the preliminary rounds.
GCCC will compete in two other rodeos this fall, the Pratt Community College Intercollegiate Rodeo, Oct. 10-12, and the Northwestern Oklahoma State Rodeo, Nov. 6-8.
