CHANUTE -- Whenever the Garden City Community College men's basketball team needed a lift, Corey Claitt delivered.
The 6-foot-1 sophomore guard poured in 35 points as the Broncbusters knocked off Neosho County Community College 79-36 on Wednesday night in a first round game of the NJCAA Region VI Tournament.
Garden City went up 17 points at 46-29 with 17 minutes to play in the game.
The Panthers stormed back with a late rally and cut the Broncs lead to five at 71-66 with just under three minutes to go.
Claitt then hit a pull-up jumper that stopped the Panthers run and gave Garden City some breathing room at 73-66.
Down the stretch, the Panthers missed three 3-pointers and began to foul with a minute left. The Broncbusters hit 6-of-8 free throws late to get the win.
Garden City improves to 20-10. The Broncbusters will play Seward County on Sunday at Koch Arena in Wichita.
Claitt was 14-of-24 from field and 2-of-3 behind the arc.
The Broncbusters had three others reach double figures, as Derrick Tarvin scored 11 points while Jordan Ragan and Trevor Ottley scored 10 apiece.
Mark Gomilla had 23 points for Neosho County. Neosho ends the season 14-17.

Lady Busters fall 72-50
Garden City Community College women's basketball coach Jake Ripple made it simple.
His team was just simply overmatched by a tall Cowley College lineup that put an end to the Lady Brocbusters season Wednesday 72-50.
With a starting lineup that went 5-foot-8, 5-11, 5-11, 6-3, 6-3, the Lady Busters had trouble up matching up at any position.
"I think the one thing that bothered us the most was how big they are," Ripple said. "It's something our girls really haven't seen."
Garden City (11-20) jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first half. The Tigers responded with a 25-4 run though, and the Lady Busters couldn't keep up from there.
The Lady Busters did cut a 22-point deficit to 15 in the second half, but that was as close as Garden City got.
Katie Novack finished with a team-high 12 point for Garden City.
Gabrielle Curtis paced Cowley with 21 point and Lauren Cherry finished with a double-double, 19 points, 13 rebounds.
