The theme was to get back on track. The outcome proved to be just that as the Garden City Community College men's soccer team dropped Cloud County at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, 5-1.
"Yeah, it looks good. I'm pleased with the effort, pleased with the way they came out. Compared to Laramie it was a good effort tonight," GCCC coach Stephen Gorton said of his team.
Three day after the Broncbusters had to come back from trailing 2-0 on Sunday against Laramie (Wyo.) County in a lackadaisical effort, GCCC simply put its offensive motor in full gear Wednesday.
The Busters scored two goals in the first half, then three more after the break. All five goals came from a different player with the first score coming from sophomore forward Federico Agreda seven minutes and 53 seconds into the game on an assist from midfielder Mariano Leo.
"If it starts them on fire, five different people get on fire and score I definitely prefer it," Gorton said of his team spreading its scoring around. "We just try to score goals. I don't really care who it comes from."
The Busters' offense laid an aggressive presence on the Thunderbirds early as they got off nine shots in the first half compared to just one for Cloud County (3-3-2).
The second GCCC goal came with 32:03 to go before halftime on a Whitney Browne goal with Frank Tayou picking up the assist.
Seven minutes into the second half the No. 4-ranked Busters struck again when Lazaro Gil scored to make it 3-0.
"We really dominated the whole game," said GCCC sophomore midfielder D.J. Zuniga, who was one of the five Busters to score. "The game before we were lacking. We needed everybody to come out with the same intensity."
Cloud County did make the game interesting for a while in the second half. A William Broomfield goal with 35:29 left cut the Thunderbirds deficit to two. Ten minutes later, Broomfield nearly pulled the Thunderbirds within a score as his shot crossed by GCCC goalkeeper Andres Benevides and banged off the right post of the goal. From there, though, it was all Busters.
Zuniga took a short pass from Browne inside the goalkeepers box, did a nifty spin within 10 feet of the goal, and put the shot in. Sophomore Jamie Villacis put the final touch to the score as he sent a 25-yard-line drive into the upper right side of the net.
"We basically have the same team as last year," Zuniga said. "We just are getting a feel for each other right now. When we hit the middle of the season that's when we start to play soccer. Right now were getting used to our new players knowing how they are, but by the middle of the season we should be pretty good."
GCCC (6-0, 2-0) is the lone undefeated team left in the Jayhawk Conference. The Busters will be on the road Saturday for a non-conference game at Northern Oklahoma in Tonkawa, Okla. The game will start at 4 p.m.
