COLBY — At times, in its first game of the Ambassador Classic on Friday at the Community Building, the Garden City Community College men's basketball squad made everything flow perfect.
Yes, the Broncbusters were playing a team made up of former college and high school players from Northwest Kansas simply called the All-Stars, but still, a win is a win. And GCCC did it quite easily with a 91-53 victory.
"This is a game I was happy with our guys' maturity," GCCC coach Kris Baumann said. "I thought they did a good job of handling things because it's hard when there's not a lot of people in the stands and you're playing people that don't even have anything on the front of their jerseys. It's one of those games — it's a tough game, and I thought we did a good job."
The Busters' win was never in doubt even though the start was a little rough. GCCC led just 15-13 almost nine minutes into the game, but started to pull away from there. After Vince Banks hit a pair of free throws to put the Busters up 28-15 it only got worse for the All-Stars.
"After two games I think we're going pretty good," GCCC forward Eric Griffin said of the Busters' 2-0 start. "We're playing together as a team. We're playing as one."
Griffin, a 6-foot-8 sophomore transfer, gave the Busters a lift with his inside presence. He finished with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Early in the second half, the Busters outscored the All-Stars 23-5 in a five-and-a-half minute stretch. Griffin, who was 4-of-5 from the floor in the second half, took an alley-oop pass from Chris McHenry on a fastbreak during the Busters run, showing how easy the team made it look at times.
The lead grew to 83-40 in the second half when freshman guard Greg Farris hit a short jumper at the 4:40 mark of the second half.
"All in all, I thought the guys did a really nice job tonight," Baumann said.
Three Busters were in double-figure scoring led by Banks' 23. Sophomore reserve forward Travis Burley tacked on 10 points and eight boards.
GCCC will finish play in the tournament today at 3 p.m. against Trinidad (Colo.) State.
