Busters ground Air Force Prep 30-7

Garden City Community College didn’t need to worry about a quick strike offense this week. And with the way Saturday night’s non-conference game at Memorial Stadium started, it was a good thing. The Broncbusters turned the ball over on their first two possessions on an interception into the end zone and a Cameron Kenney fumble at the Air Force Prep 6-yard line. But with the defense clamping down on a potent Husky offense, the Buster offense was able to find enough steam to run away for a 30-7 win.

“We just didn’t put points on the board like we need to,” Garden City head coach Lucas Aslin said. “It could have been a lot different game if we would have put some points on the board early.”

Garden City’s first touchdown came at the 1:26 mark of the first quarter when quarterback Eugene Smith hit Adrian Jones for a 39-yard strike across the middle. It took the Busters just two possessions later to make it 14-0 in the second quarter on a Smith 44-yard touchdown pass to Kenney. Garden City (2-1) was set up at the 44 on a 26-yard punt return by Ryan Smith, who had a big night from his running back spot. The sophomore ran for 105 yards on just six carries. Smith had a 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

“We came out shaky, but we knew all we needed was for everyone to do their job on offense,” Ryan Smith said. “We left a lot of points off the board, but as an offensive unit we knew that we’re going to have to play better.”

The Busters lead grew to 27-0 before the Huskies (1-3) mounted a 15-play, 60-yard drive in the third quarter and scored on a Mikel Whittier 8-yard run. It was the only drive the Busters defense gave up as Air Force Prep was forced to punt 11 times, eight of those coming in the first half. Garden City’s final points came in the fourth quarter when Kenney booted a 52-yard field goal with 6:32 left. Garden City will be back in Jayhawk Conference play Saturday at Fort Scott. The No. 12 ranked Greyhounds beat the Busters twice last season.

“Sophomores on the team — we still have a little anger from last week,” Ryan Smith said about the Busters 34-29 loss to Butler. “I know we’re going to go out there with the same mentality as we went out there before. (Fort Scott) is going to feel where we should have got them last year.”

Eugene Smith, who threw for 395 yards on Butler, finished with 181 yards through the air with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also had 76 yards rushing.
