Busters rally falls short, Butler prevails 34-29

Published 9/7/2008 in Sports

Behind a near flawless performance by quarterback Press Taylor, the No. 1 ranked Grizzlies escaped Memorial Stadium with a 34-29 Jayhawk Conference win. It was somewhat redeeming to a team that opened its season just nine days before with a 23-20 loss to No. 2 Blinn.

The Broncbusters made it interesting early and then made it interesting again late. But in beween, Garden City Community College’s first and last touchdowns was where Butler County did it’s scoring damage and it was enough to hold off anything the Broncbusters could catch up to by the end.

For the Broncbusters, the loss came on the final day of Athletic Director Vic Trilli duties at GCCC, who submitted his resignation August 27 to take the athletic director position at Newman University in Wichita.

The Busters looked to give Trilli a winning goodbye early as they marched 77 yards on their first possession and took a 6-0 lead on a Eugene Smith 17-yard pass to wide receiver Cameron Kenney. Smith was on fire throughout the game, completing a remarkable 43-of-59 passes for 393 yards and four touchdowns.

His most impressive work came late when he directed the Busters on drives of 74 and 47 yards in the final four minutes. After he hit Kenney for a two-yard score that pulled Garden City (1-1, 0-1) within 34-21 with 17.4 seconds left, he needed just three plays to respond for the Busters after they recovered the onside kick. He connected with running back Ryan Smith on a 10-yard strike with 1.7 seconds left on the clock. It was all too little, all too late.

Butler scored on its first two possessions behind the guidance of quarterback Press Taylor. The Grizzly sophomore threw five touchdown passes. His first two were to Tyrece Gaines on passes of two and 41 yards. He hit running back Randell Bell for a one-yard score in the second quarter, then threw an 11-yard TD strike to tight end Elex Estes in the third quarter. He completed an impressive performance with a five-yard toss to Lucas Hamm in the fourth quarter that gave Butler what appeared to be an insurmountable 34-13 lead.
