GCCC Football Spring Game

Dontrell Johnson is used to dishing out punishment, not taking it.

So, admittedly, the 5-foot-10, 180 pound Garden City Community College defensive back turned receiver was a little wary when the coaching staff approached him about making the switch to offense.

"I don't like to get hit," Johnson said with a sheepish grin. "I like to do the hitting."

Then again, defenses will have to actually catch him first.

Johnson caught five passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns on Friday night to help lead the White team to a 42-31 win over the Brown team in the Broncbusters' annual spring game.

"Offensively, we scored a few more points than I was anticipating which is always good," second-year head coach Lucas Aslin said. "Defensively, we played alright. They missed some tackles and did some things we probably need to do a better job of, but overall I thought they did pretty good."

With star receiver Cameron Kenney sidelined for the game with an injured shoulder, Johnson, a redshirt freshman, stepped up as the Broncbusters big play threat.

His first reception came on a 30-yard strike from quarterback Eugene Smith. On first down, Johnson made an over-the-shoulder catch on the precision lob by Smith and darted just inside the pylon.

Johnson struck again, taking a screen pass from Smith 31-yards down the sideline for his second score of the game.

Smith was 12-of-16 passing with 98 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and enters fall practices as the team's starting quarterback.

"It's the first time since I've been here that we've had the same quarterback that started in the fall here in the spring," Aslin said. "He's getting better and better, and that's going to be the big thing with him. Constant improvement. I feel really good about him coming into the fall."

Behind Smith, tailback Ryan Smith put on an impressive showing to position himself as the front runner to replace last year's starter Maurice Greer. The 5-9, 190-pound speedster carried the ball five times for 55 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown on the game's third possession to put the White team on the board.

Also jockeying for the top spot at tailback is Nick Allen, who carried three times for 18 yards.

"(Smith has) had a really good spring," Aslin said. "He's got all the tools, but he just has to get more consistent. Right now, him and Nick both have a shot and are guys that I trust can come and play for us."

"Overall, I was impressed. Some guys rose their stock tonight, and some guys didn't."

Notes: Kenney and fellow receiver Anthony Chalmers both sat out of Friday's scrimmage. Kenney is still healing from an injury earlier this spring.

"He'll probably start running here in about two weeks," Aslin said of Kenney. "It's really just a four-to-six week injury."
