The Garden City Community College Broncbusters were tapped No. 9 in the country by the National Junior College Athletic Association's pre-season poll released Monday. The Busters, who will be enter their second season under head coach Lucas Aslin, were 7-3 in his inaugural campaign.

"I'm a little surprised we're ranked that high," Aslin said. "I thought we might be in the top 20 but this just means we have a chance to win some games early and move up. It does put some pressure on us, but this also gives us some exposure."

Defending co-national champion Butler Community College, who was 12-0 a year ago, is back at the top for the kickoff of the 2008 season. The Grizzlies were followed in the top five by Blinn College (7-3), Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (12-0), Snow College (11-1) and Georgia Military College (9-2).

Aslin, whose team opens fall drills August 9, said he thought his recruiting class for 2008 will offset substantial losses from the outgoing class of a year ago. The Busters have just six returning starters on both sides. Garden City opens its season Aug. 30 with a road game at Cisco Community College in Cisco, Texas. Cisco was tabbed No. 24 team in the poll.

"We've got a number of good returners and some redshirts from last year to build around," Aslin said. "We've got some good recruits coming in and it will be fun to see how we'll do."
