Finney County splits at Hooker

Published 7/2/2009 in Sports

By The Sports Staff

The Finney County Blues didn't need a 13 inning game to get past Hooker, Okla. this time around. After losing the first game 8-7 Wednesday in Hooker, the Blues bounced back to dominate the nightcap 13-3 in six innings.

The split comes on the eve of the Jim Clanton Tournament for the Blues, who will start play Friday at 4 and 8 p.m. Both games will be at Williams Stadium.

"I'm opportunistic with our chances of winning the darn thing," Blues coach Don Griffin said of the Clanton Tournament. "The way we've been playing the last three weeks or so, I'm really opportunistic. We can definitely compete this year."

On Wednesday, the Blues couldn't hold on to an early lead and Hooker rallied to win in the fifth. Finney County had 10 hits in the game, compared to five for the Horney Toads. The Blues' biggest problem was errors as they committed five.

Brendon Thackery pitched the first game for the Blues.

"(Thackery) didn't pitch bad," Griffin said. "He only gave up five hits. Errors killed us last night. (Hooker's) last run was pretty much scored off an error."

In the nightcap, the Blues offense dominated the Hooker pitching. Josh Morales, who hit a home run in the first game added a second in the next game. Arric Holmes also added a home run.

Finney County used three pitchers in the second game as Morales started then gave way to Brad Powers in the fifth. Kole Milner closed out the game by getting the Horney Toads to go down in order with a ground out then two strikeouts.

When the Clanton Tournament starts Friday there will be six teams in the upper division and five in the lower. Along with Finney County, Lakin will play in the upper division. The other four teams playing are Butler County, Elkhart, Widefield, Colo. and Southern Colorado.

In the lower division, which consists of teams 16-and-under, the Finney County Bandits and Finney County Storm will play. The Bandits will play at 2 and 6 p.m. Griffin said there were nine scheduled teams to play, but some have had to back out in the last couple weeks.

"That's OK, we'll deal with what we got," Griffin said.
