Busters sign Cobb from Southeast

His statistics won't jump out at the casual basketball fan as anything spectacular. But ask Garden City Community College men's basketball coach Kris Baumann about his first signed Broncbuster new to the program next winter, and he'll identify Ronald Cobb as a player with plenty of quality. Which in turn is something Baumann hopes makes up for in the lack of quantity numbers.

Cobb, a 6-foot-8 post from Wichita Southeast, became the first player to sign and send in his national letter of intent to with the Region 6 champion Busters on April 8.

"His numbers aren't staggering, but he's a transfer from Dallas and this was his only year in Coach Carl Taylor's system at Wichita Southeast," Baumann said. "He had to make some adjustments to what he was used to."

In his one season at Southeast, Cobb was a big part of the Buffaloes' run to the Class 6A championship game, a 73-58 loss to Wichita Heights. Cobb finished the season averaging 8.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks a game. At the end of the regular season and through sub-state play into the state tournament Cobb strung together four straight double-doubles. Against Wichita West, the game that began the streak, Cobb nearly reached the 20-20 mark, finishing with 19 points and 20 rebounds.

With Garden City's loss of 6-9 Trevor Ottley who graduates and will play at Middle Tennessee State starting in the fall, Baumann was in need of an inside player to go along with Martell Jackson who returns. Cobb was the type of player Baumann was looking for.

"The thing I like is that he is a true inside post player," Baumann said. "He is a guy that can come in and really help us. He has great hands and he has a tremendous feel for the game and he knows how to play. I really think that he can come in here, show a lot of progression and then sign with a (NCAA) Division I program."

Behind the recruiting curve a little at the end of the season as the Broncbusters played in the NJCAA national tournament and placed sixth, Baumann said he could have a couple of more signings in the next few days. He may also receive another commitment by the end of the week.
