As any coach will say, attitude means more than just about anything else. When it comes to the Garden City Community College men's and women's cross country teams, head coach Dan Delgado couldn't be more proud with that of his two squads.
"The attitudes have been very positive from both the men's and women's teams," Delgado said. "There's some kids that what we've asked them to do — there's some of the kids it's been very hard. They're not laying down, they're not quitting. They're fighting through it."
For a pair of programs coming off a season in which the men placed third at the NJCAA nationals, and women 12th, it's just what any coach could hope for. Now, it's just about putting it all into motion. That's something Delgado will get to see for the first time Friday when the Broncbusters open the season at the Colby Invitational.
"As a whole, in the five years that I've been here, this group seems to be more on the same page about practice and conditioning than in past," Delgado said. "We've had some good percentages in past years — and this one (assistant coach Margo) McNutt and I are both pleased with the effort level."
Opening on the course that put a stamp on just how high the men's team would climb last year when the Busters tied for the Region 6 title with Cowley College, the anticipation level couldn't be much higher.
"I was extremely pleased with our sophomores conditioning over the summer," Delgado said of a group of six from the men's team and three from the women's squad. "That has gone to a whole new level. The freshmen's conditioning coming in has been much better."
Led by All-Americans Mohamed Noor and Gabriel Proctor the men's team re-loaded with a freshmen class of 12, and one sophomore transfer, Dustin Baker, from Leoti, who was at Pratt Community College last year.
The women have two returnees, Heidi Hines and Lindsey Nevola, while one sophomore transfer and five freshmen join them.
