SUBLETTE -- For the first time this season, the Cimarron Lady Bluejays volleyball team found the consistency that coach Lori George has been preaching.
The result was a solid performance Tuesday night in a Hi-Plains League quadrangular in which the Lady 'Jays swept past Satanta (25-18, 25-20), Sublette (25-14, 25-16) and Wichita County (25-23, 25-9). Cimarron now sports a 14-7 season mark and 4-3 in the HPL.
"They played their game and went for every shot tonight," George said. "They worked together very well tonight and we just didn't want the ups and downs that we've been having. We had to win these three games to help with the (league) seeding. For three games, the girls really stepped up and played well. We just wanted to break this pattern of not playing well."
One of the reasons may be the offensive switch George made for Tuesday's matches. She switched to a 6-2 offense that allowed Taylor Siek to play most of the game rather than substituting. She also got strong performances from Kelsey Stucky, who played despite having been sick. Her libero, Katelyn Ridenour, also turned in a strong performance on the back row while Janae Helfrich was also solid as the team's primary setter.
"Avery Burns also played well for us tonight," George said of the sophomore. "She just hustles for every ball and that's what we need."
George said in their match against Wichita County that had a close first set, the team realized that they were making most of the mistakes that resulted in the Lady Indians scoring.
"Once we realized that, we were able to cut down our mistakes and then we played pretty well," George said.
Satanta coach Ashton Wenta was also pleased with her Lady Indians, who won their remaining two matches against Wichita County (26-24, 22-25, 25-13) and Sublette (25-10, 25-23) to improve to 4-4 in the league and 5-12 overall.
"We played much better tonight," Wenta said "We've made a lot of improvement, especially in our coverage. Despite our record, we've been in almost every game we've played. We're just so close."
Wenta was happy to hear that Satanta will be in Class 1A for its regional assignment this year, which was just announced on Monday by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
"We just want to try and come out of regionals and have a shot at sub-state," Wenta said. "We've got quite a few juniors and we're just getting comfortable with everyone on the floor and where they're supposed to be."
