And for good reason.

Scott City now boasts a 3-0 record after Friday's 27-0 shutout of Mid-State Activities Association rival Ulysses at Maxwell Stadium. The Beavers defense has yet to give up a touchdown the only score the team has given up was a blocked punt last week at Pratt.

"It's a real pride thing," said Morgan Numrich, a senior lineman and linebacker who picked off two Bryce Moral passes to highlight a big defensive effort by the Beavers. "We just want to keep those goose eggs up there. I certainly have never had two interceptions. I guess I was just in the right place at the right time."

Ulysses kept itself in the game early as its defense showed some teeth, too, but eventually Scott City's balanced offensive attack was too much for the Tigers.

"We had our opportunities early and just couldn't get anything going," Ulysses coach Jason Kenny said. "We've got to find a way to get our offense doing more. We had some early success with the passing, but just couldn't get anything on the ground."

After a scoreless first quarter, junior quarterback Ron Baker went to the air for the Beavers' first score, a 15-yard strike to Jorden Funk.

Then the momentum went right back to the Beavers when Numrich picked off his first Moral pass to set Scott City back up at the Tiger 28. It took Scott City six plays to go ahead 14-0 when Baker scampered around right end on an option keeper with only 1:06 remaining before intermission.

The Beavers then removed any question about the outcome as they took the opening second half kickoff, marched 51 yards in only five plays, with Baker connecting with Alex Swan for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 10:05 left in the third quarter.

Scott City tallied its final touchdown early in the fourth quarter when junior Jason Williams raced 50 yards for the score at the 10:24 mark. Brett O'Neil's extra point kick went wide right.

Swan gained 65 yards on eight attempts and he caught three passes for 63 yards. Williams finished with 77 yards on eight carries as the Beavers rolled up 226 yards on the ground. The Scott City defense held Ulysses to 77 yards on 32 rushes.

Baker connected on 7-of-12 passes for 103 yards with no interceptions. Moral finished with 6-of-16 for 111 yards and the two picks.
