The Garden City High School volleyball squad landed three players on the All-WAC first team — which tied Dodge City for most players on the list — with two other players earning honorable mention.

Highlighting the list for GCHS was junior Paula Gonzales, who led the Lady Buffaloes in kills for the season with 213. Gonzales also led the team with an average of 2.34 kills per game and had a hitting efficiency of 27.9-percent. Gonzales was also fifth on the squad in digs with 83 and was tops on the team with 67 blocks.

Garden City's only senior to make it on the first team was Chinwe Ekweariri. Ekweariri finished with 170 kills for the season and had an average of 2.07 kills per game with a 20.5-percent hitting efficiency. The senior was second in blocks with 63.

GCHS freshman Casey Curran was the only underclassman on the 12-player first team list that consisted of five seniors and six juniors. Curran closed out her first year with the Lady Buffs with 115 kills and an average of 1.26 kills per game, while recording a 26-percent hitting efficiency. The freshman finished with 19 blocks to go with 49 assists and 95 digs — good enough for fourth on the team.

Making honorable mention was senior Lexi Parr and sophomore Kristen Heiman. Parr closed out her career at GCHS by finishing second in digs for the Lady Buffs with 309 — junior Alexa Aldaco led with 314 digs — and was third on the team in aces with 23 — senior Reagan Hill led with 49 aces.

Heiman finished third on the team in total kills with 162 for the year. The sophomore finished with an average of 1.78 kills per game and a hitting efficiency of 12.8.

The Lady Buffs ended their season with a 14-22 record under first-year head coach Bob Schmitz. Their season ended in the opening round of Class 6A sub-state in a 25-18, 25-19 loss to Maize.

Dodge City coach Katie Szymczak earned WAC coach of the year honors after leading her squad to the WAC tournament title. Red Demons player A'zylnn Thompson was named the WAC player of the year.
