COFFEYVILLE -- The Garden City Broncbusters (10-2) took advantage of a painfully slow start by the Fort Scott Greyhounds (2-4) Friday night at the Annual Jayhawk Shootout, cruising to a 67-30 victory in Coffeyeville.
The undersized Greyhounds scored just four points in the first 15:30 as the Busters half court press proved to be too much.
The Busters rarely broke a sweat and guard Jordan Ragan forced several turnovers leading to easy baskets for Garden City. The Busters raced to a 22-2 lead and had six players score in the first twelve minutes.
Garden City had seven players score in the first half, led by Cory Claitt, who had 10. Claitt was one of four players who hit a three-pointer in the first half. Trevor Ottley added nine points and continuously laid out for loose balls. In the absence of Derrick Tarvin, Ottley thrived and compiled more minutes than in any other game this season.
The Busters opened the game on a high note and Garden City suffered no fatigue, despite traveling all day. They lead 33-16 at halftime.
"We had a good talk on the bus and everyone was pumped for the game" said Ottley.
He's missed some of the season because of injury and sickness but battled through it.
"I finally had a complete game and look forward to more", added Ottley. The Greyhounds cut the lead to 10 in the second half before the Busters went on a 10-2 run.
Fort Scott entered play with five players averaging in double figures, led by Aresenio Williams, 21 points per game. He finished with 20, most from the free throw line.
The Busters play Labette Sunday morning at 9am and then will be off for a month before starting Jayhawk play on January 4th.
