PRIME TIME: Busters look dominant against Trinidad State

Published 11/24/2007 in Sports : GCCC By Tony Adame

The points came fast and furious, and from lots of different places.

As Garden City Community College kept building on its huge lead Friday night against Trinidad (Colo.) State in the opening round of the Thanksgiving Classic at Perryman Athletic Complex, it was tough to tell who was the man for the Busters.

Was it Damien Young, who came off the bench and canned four 3-pointers in the first half?

Was it Tyrone Flemming, whose stifling defense and pair of highlight reel dunks sparked the Garden City attack?

Or was it Jordan Ragan, who led the Busters with 17 points and hit 5-of-7 3-pointers?

Maybe Tim Brown, who scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds?

It was all of them, and then some.

Garden City improved to 9-1 on the season with an 86-72 win, their fourth straight victory, and looked dominant in the process.

"I thought our interior play really worked tonight," said Garden City coach Kris Baumann. "When we needed baskets we were able to go inside and get points. I don't think we let the lead get below double digits in the second half."

The Broncbusters started off the game with a 12-0 run in which five different players scored for Garden City. Trinidad pulled to within 15 points at 32-17 before Young came off the bench and hit four straight 3-pointers to help send his team to the halftime break with a 48-30 lead.

"Damien gives us a guy who can really shoot and is a solid defender," Baumann said. "He knows his role on the team, accepts it, and guys really enjoy playing with him."

In the second half, Garden City opened with a 7-0 run, and added a 10-0 run before the ten-minute mark to push the lead to 73-49.

"If we're scoring on the outside and the inside, there's no guarding us," Ragan said. "And if we defend tonight like we did in the first half, we're really dangerous and can do some things."

Garden City takes on Independence, a Jayhawk East team, at 8 p.m. tonight.
