Midland rocks GCCC

Things couldn't have gotten much uglier for the Lady Busters on Friday night.

Garden City failed to generate any consistancy in offense on their way to a 74-49 blowout loss to Midland College at the Perryman Athletic Complex.

For at least one half, the Lady Busters looked as if they'd at least make it a contest. Despite their struggles, Garden City only trailed 33-25 at the end of the first half.

Then, things started to go sour.

Despite initial success from their post players, the Lady Busters struggled from the field once they began to migrate towards the outside. Garden City's post players shot 8-of-11 from the floor against Midland, while the rest of the team was 9-48.

"One of the things we talked about at halftime was getting post touches," head coach Jake Ripple said. "I'm disappointed that we didn't do that."

Midland outscored the Lady Busters 41-24 in the second half, with three players finishing in double figures. Heissy Robledo led the Lady Chaps in scoring, going 5-of-8 from the floor for 14 points, while Morriah Smith and Ashley Bey both finished with 11 points.

Amelia Jones, meanwhile, lead all scorers with 16 points for Garden City, eight of those coming on free throws. As a team, the Lady Busters struggled mightily from the floor, shooting only .288 on the night and going only 4-for-16 from beyond the arc.

"I think depth had a factor," said Midland head coach Ron Jones. "Garden City missed shots at the beginning of the first half, and we were hitting them."

After winning two straight earlier in the month, Garden City (3-6) has now dropped two games in a row on their home court, including Tuesday night's one point loss Otero. The Lady Busters will look to avoid going winless at the Thanksgiving Classic tomorrow against Northeastern at the Perryman Athletic Complex. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
