Busters gear up for weekend

Published 11/23/2007

While nothing has proven more enigmatic this season than the game-to-game persona of Garden City Community College's mens' basketball team, the numbers for the 8-1 Broncbusters do not lie.

Garden City is outrebounding its opponents by almost 10 boards per game, 40.3 to 30.9. The Broncbusters block almost five shots per game, with the majority of those blocks coming from 6-foot-9 center Sterling Link and 6-8 reserve forward Chris Roquemore.

Only two players from Garden City average double digits in scoring, Corey Claitt (17.3 ppg) and Jordan Ragan (11.8), but three other players average better than eight points per game.

And, they're 8-1.

Starting tonight, Garden City has a chance to improve on its stellar record with a pair of home games at the annual Thanksgiving Classic, taking on Trinidad (Colo.) State Junior College (5-3) at 8 p.m. Garden City squares off with Independence Community College (4-3) at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

On the flip side, the Broncbusters have dug double-digit deficits for themselves in three of their last four games, and have managed to come back from each hole to win or tie.

One advantage for the Broncbusters this weekend will be size, which Garden City has in spades. Trinidad's tallest players is 6-6.

Independence's tallest player is 6-7 post T.J. Stukes, who is averaging 8.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest.

Garden City has five players in its rotation 6-7 or taller. Trinidad has played its last two games against teams from the Jayhawk West, an 84-34 loss to Seward County last Friday in Liberal, and a 74-65 win over Pratt on Saturday.

The Lady Busters (3-5), already two wins better than last year's win total, take on Midland (Texas) Junior College tonight at 6 p.m., and Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Holcomb product Katie Novack leads Garden City in scoring at 13.5 points per game.

Whitnie Young is second at 12.6 ppg.
