Bringing it home

Published 11/10/2007 in Sports : GCCC By Tony Adame

In their own different ways, Jordan Ragan and Tim Brown both said the same thing after Garden City Community College's 75-47 win Friday over Laramie County Community College in the Pepsi Classic.

That is, it's all about the team.

"I want to get everybody involved, offensively and defensively," said Ragan, who scored 14 points and dished out six assists. "We want to focus on keeping the ball moving and not making stupid turnovers."

Brown was a tad more blunt.

"We want to attack the other team, make them not want to come to the lane," said the 6-foot-8 freshman. "They get fouled hard or get their shot blocked a couple of times and they're going to think twice the next time they come in. Maybe they'll take a jumper or something."

Brown chipped in with eight points, six rebounds and four blocks as the Broncbusters moved to 4-1 on the season and won its second straight game.

Tyrone Flemming was the only other Garden City player in double figures with 10 points, but 12 of 13 players who saw action against Laramie scored. Corey Claitt had nine points and four steals for the Broncbusters.

"That was the balance I've been looking for," said Garden City coach Kris Baumann. "It's amazing the things that we can accomplish when nobody cares who gets the credit."

The two teams played even for the first 10 minutes, changing leads 14 times before Garden City clawed its way to a 37-27 halftime lead thanks to a 6-0 run followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Ragan and Derrick Tarvin to end the half.

"We just needed to take our time and let the game flow," Brown said. "We didn't think they had any big guys that could match up with us."

Things got ugly for Laramie County (0-3) in the second half, as Garden City opened with a 12-0 run and never looked back. The Broncbusters pushed the lead to as much as 71-42 late in the game on a Colby Gantz 3-pointer.

"I thought we were defending really well tonight," Baumann said. "I thought our big guys were really a presence around the rim. I thought Corey did a great job tonight, too, he's not just active offensively, he plays hard on both ends."

Garden City held Laramie to just 14 of 54 shooting. Garden City made 16 of 28 shots in the second half.

Garden City takes on Frank Phillips tonight at 8 p.m. in a matchup of the two, 2-0 teams left in the Pepsi Classic.

"People should come out tonight if they want to see some great basketball," Baumann said. "There's going to be some athletic kids getting after it out there."
