Double-double by Brown sparks Busters

Published 11/3/2007 in Sports : GCCC By Marshall

LIBERAL -- There are plenty of ways to describe Garden City Community College's 113-50 win over the Sterling Junior Varsity at the Seward Classic on Friday -- like, for instance, a "blowout" or "domination".

However, Busters forward Tim Brown had a different way of seeing things.

"We were just trying to go out there and make a statement," Brown said. "Tomorrow, we're going to try to make another statement. And the next game? Another statement."

Brown, who has been sidelined for the past two weeks with an injured back, stepped off the bench to deliver 18 points and 12 rebounds, helping Garden City (2-0, 0-0) stay undefeated going into tonight's match up against Seward County.

"We just have to get ready for tomorrow," said Garden City coach Kris Baumann. "We play a team in our league on their home floor, it's a great test for us this early in the season. We knew we were going to win this game."

The game's outcome seemed determined from the opening tip, as the Warriors (0-2, 0-0) were out matched by the Busters' superior athleticism. By halftime, Garden City had already built a 57-30 lead behind 10 points each from Brown and sophomore guard Tyrone Flemming. The only hiccup of the first half came early in the game, when Trevor Ottley left the game with a severe limp. Ottley emerged from the locker room in the second half with ice on his ankle and did not re-enter the game, and it was not know at press time if Ottley would play against the Saints.

The second half was more of the same as the Busters outscored Sterling 56-20 behind another 19 points and 10 rebounds from Brown. With the game's outcome never in doubt, Brown played 23 minutes off the bench in the win.

"He played a lot of minutes, I was trying to get him in there more," Baumann said. "I was pretty happy with his performance tonight."
