Busters escape with win at Air Force

Published 10/15/2007

Garden City Community College's 22-15 win over Air Force Prep in Colorado Springs on Saturday puts the No. 17 Broncbusters on a five-game winning streak and on the cusp of being ranked in the top 15 when the new NJCAA poll comes out tomorrow.

Just don't expect head coach Lucas Aslin to care.

"It's exactly where we were last year," Aslin said. "We've got to stay the ship, hold things steady and try to win a few down the stretch."

Aslin, in his first year as head coach, was the defensive coordinator on last year's Broncbuster squad that lost their final three games after starting the season 6-1. So don't be surprised that he isn't dwelling on a win that, until Maurice Greer scored the game's final touchdown with less than two minutes to play, was in doubt for most of the afternoon.

The Busters jumped out to an early 14-6 lead after a touchdown run by Greer on the game's opening drive. After the Falcons responded on their next drive, quarterback Eugine Smith found Anthony Chalmers in the end zone to put Garden City up by eight.

Then, things slowed down.

The Broncbusters' offense was held scoreless for the next two-and-a-half quarters, while Air Force Prep eventually chipped away at the eight point lead with three field goals. With two minutes remaining in the game, the Falcons had taken a 15-14 lead.

Despite putting up over 400 yards of total offense, Garden City struggled to find the end zone due to what Aslin said "seemed like 300 yards" of penalties. Yet, in the game's final minutes, the Broncbusters took care of business.

Smith found Cameron Kenney on a fade route down the sideline to put Garden City within striking distance as the clock wound down. Greer then gave the Busters the late lead with his second touchdown of the day.

"We looked like we were going to die, but we made a few big plays and won the game," Aslin said. "They didn't do anything we weren't prepared for, we just didn't execute."

Garden City (6-1, 4-1) will return to Jayhawk Conference play Saturday when they travel to face Coffeyville.
