No leading scorer? No coach?
No problem.
The Garden City Community College's mens soccer team blanked rivals Dodge City Community College, 2-0, at Memorial Stadium on Sunday night despite the absence of coach Stephen Gorton and three of their top starters.
"It's a pretty good result," said Gorton of the win. "We sat 3 sophomores, I wasn't down on there, and it was our home opener. I'm pretty happy with that."
Gorton watched the game from on top of the pressbox while serving a suspension incurred in last year's Jayhawk Conference semi-final against Coffeyville. After leading scorer Javier Jiminez received two yellow cards, Gorton had some choice words with the referees and was asked to sit the home opener. Jiminez was also absent due to a suspension resulting from the yellow cards.
Despite missing a number of key contributors, the Broncbusters dominated the game from the opening whistle and struck almost immediately. Midway through the third minute, freshman Sergio Calderon snuck one by Dodge City's Jacob Cassity on an assist from Chad Mitchell to give Garden City an early 1-0 lead.
"The only thing I saw was the ball," said Calderon of his goal. "I saw the ball, then I looked up at the net. I saw where the goalie was and I just put it where he wasn't."
In his first start for the Broncbusters, Calderon was a force to be reckoned with as he constantly broke away from the defense and initiated attack after attack.
"I was a little nervous before the game," Calderon said. "But you know, once you get out there on the field you just have to take care of your business. Its a whole other game."
Dodge City had the chance to tie in the eighth minute after Bonaficio Sanchez hit Francisco Mata with a through pass, splitting the Broncbuster defense. Mata fired a cross in to Rayo, who shot towards an open net and hit the left post. Mata rebounded as goalkeeper Ivan Zarate was recovering, but defender Cole Johnson blocked the shot with his body.
Defensively, Johnson and Zach Bowling consistently disrupted the Dodge City attack, leaving them unable to answer Calderon's early goal.
Bowling put an end to one of Dodge City's best chances of the night in the 25th minute as Eduardo Anguiano broke through at full speed in transition. Bowling met Anguiano in a dead run and executed a textbook tackle, clearing the ball out of danger.
"He played a big time game," Gorton said of Bowling. "He didn't get a lot of minutes last year, but we've been working with him. He's turning into a soccer player."
The second half was more of the same as Garden City continued to dominate possession and attack relentlessly. As the Broncbusters continued to press, scoring chances were abundant.
Midway through the second half, an apparent goal by Chad Mitchell was disallowed after he was called offside.
Dodge City had one last chance to tie the score on a late set piece from the top of Garden City's box. Gabriel Rios struck the ball into the hands of Zarate, who bobbled it before eventually diving on it.
After the play, tempers flared as a scuffle broke out that resulted in five yellow cards between the two teams.
"Apparently one of Dodge's players tried to get the ball away from the goalie while he was on the ground," Bowling said. "He got mad, some words were exchanged, and people started pushing."
Zarate, Bowling and Tareq Al-Lugman were all booked for their participation in the fight.
"We're not just a team, we're family," Calderon said of the fight. "We win, we lose, we tie together. It hurts when you see one of your guys getting hurt like that."
In the 90th minute, the Broncbusters put the game on ice with a goal by Tyler Jordan.
With the win, the Broncbusters move to 1-0 and pick up their first conference win of the season. Garden City continues their season Sept. 6 against Barton County at Memorial Stadium.
