Scott City boys, girls look primed to make noise

By The Telegram The Scott City Beavers just narrowly missed a trip to the Class 4A state tournament a year ago, falling in the finals of the sub-state.
From the team that finished 18-5, coach Glenn O'Neil returns three starters, including a pair of All-Mid State Activities Association honorees in senior Alex Swan and junior Ron Baker. Baker, a 6-0 guard, averaged 10.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game while Swan, a 6-0 guard, averaged 8.6 points, three assists and two rebounds per game.
"For us to be successful, we will have to play good defense and rebound better," O'Neil said after losing 6-4 Levi Kuntzsch to graduation. "We believe we will have good offensive balance with the players we have back."
The other returning starter will be 6-4 senior Jorden Funk, who averaged 6.2 points and 3.5 rebounds as a junior.

"Ron and Alex will lead a potentially strong guard group," O'Neil said. "We believe we will be competitive, but the league will also be competitive."
O'Neil also has four other lettermen back from a year ago. That group includes seniors Austin Davis (6-4 forward) and Robby Strube (6-1 guard) and juniors Kaleb Roemer (5-7 guard) and Mason Turner (6-1 forward).
The Beavers do not open their season until Dec. 10 when they play host to the annual Scott City Invitational, an eight-team, three-day, tournament for both the boys and girls.

With three returning starters from last year's 17-5 Scott City girls basketball team, first-year coach Mark Campos is looking for a strong performance from this season's Lady Beavers. "We have a ton of experience and depth coming back this season," Campos said. "That will be our best strength going into the season." With 5-9 senior forward Justine Woofter (9.2 points, 7.3 rebounds), 5-8 senior forward Jade Glunz (5.2 points, 3.8 rebounds) and 5-7 senior guard Amanda Shearmire (6.2 points, 2.2 assists), Campos will have a blend of frontcourt and backcourt experience. Woofter, one of the top all-around athletes in the area, was a recent first-team selection to The Telegram's All-Area volleyball team. Add in a solid group of underclassmen and one can expect the Lady Beavers to be one of the top 4A schools around. Campos has good size up front with 5-10 junior center Carissa Chelemedos (6.9 points, 4.2 rebounds) and 5-10 guard Allie O'Neil (3.6 points, 1.7 assists). Other players who saw action a year ago include 5-4 sophomore guard Karli Stucky (4.0 points), and 5-7 junior forward Emily Hess (3.2 points, 3.7 rebounds). "The solid inside/outside group we have in the seniors will be a big plus for us," Campos said. "That group has a good chance of being in the top 10 of many SCHS career records." ------------
