Lady Larks shoot for another chance at state tourney

There's nothing more the Sublette Lady Larks would like to do than get a return trip to Manhattan and the Class 2A state basketball tournament.

They've already had a taste of the state volleyball tournament in November and came home from Hays with a fourth-place finish.

The taste from last year's 2A state was not so good as the Larks went down to a 46-39 quarterfinal defeat at the hands of St. Marys, returning home with a 17-7 record.

"We've got some good size," third-year Lady Larks coach Bob Lamborn said. "We hope to compete for the (Hi-Plains League) title."

The size that Lamborn refers to includes 5-11 senior Sumr Robinett, who averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds a game last year while earning All-Hi Plains League honors. Another senior, 5-5 guard Aileen Gonzalez, averaged 5 points per game and was an honorable mention all-league selection. Three other veteran seniors, Emily Lucas, Suzanna Mayhew and Summer Rhone are back for their final season and all should play key roles. Lucas averaged 6 points a game her junior season. She recently signed a national letter-of-intent to play volleyball at University of Missouri-Kansas City and is a three-time 2A state high jump champion. Her inside skills should give the Larks additional rebounding strength. Mayhew and Rhone averaged 4 and 3 points, respectively, in reserve roles last season.

Three underclassmen figure to also find playing time this season for the Lady Larks. Anna Messerly, a 5-7 sophomore, 5-8 junior Megan Reiss, and 6-1 freshman Daryan Whaler look to provide depth to an already talented group of upperclassmen.

Four seniors pace Larks' boys team

For second-year coach Matt Ziegler and his Sublette Larks boys basketball team, the 2008-09 season is one in which his new system implemented a year ago has a chance to catch hold and see things come around.

Ziegler returns four seniors off last year's 12-10 team that also finished at 6-4 in the Hi-Plains League.

The group of seniors is led by a pair of 6-2 frontcourt players -- Tyler Bruce and Brett Holloway. Another two seniors, both guards, will provide backcourt experience for the Larks in Sam Marlin and Cody Martin. Other players returning with experience include juniors Gus Gesling (5-10), Brandon Stokes (5-9) and Brandon Webb (6-1). Derek Birney (6-3 So.) and Travis Leverett (5-8 So.) will be expected to gain varsity playing time this season as well. Zielger is also hoping that 5-8 freshman guard Alex White will progress and see time in the varsity lineup.
