Basketball: Deerfield starts with two new coaches

Shane Burns knows that for his Deerfield Spartans to see an uptick in their basketball success, it will rest on the shoulders of senior David Gonzales and the other returning starter, Jose Rincon.

"David is an outstanding student/athlete and I think he will be one of the players to watch this season," said Burns, entering his first year as coach of the Deerfield boys.

The Spartans struggled to a 5-16 mark a year ago, but Burns said he feels Gonzales, a 6-foot guard, and Rincon, a 6-0 senior forward, will give him a strong 1-2 scoring punch.

Also figuring into the Spartans success will be junior guard Cris Martinez (5-9), senior Beto Medrano (6-4 forward), junior Julio Gonzales (6-2 center) and Brennan Wood (6-3 soph. center).

"We are very optimistic about this year," Burns said.

Crandall takes over girls team

It's been 15 years since Doug Crandall sat on the sidelines as a head girls basketball coach in high school. But that's where he'll be this season as he takes over the head coaching position for the Deerfield girls squad.

Crandall hopes the return of several key players will aid in the resurrection of the fortunes of the Deerfield girls. After going 18-6 two years ago, they struggled to a 2-19 record last season.

"We will be a very young team but we will play with an attitude and play hard," Crandall said. "We aren't very big, but I think we've got some quickness."

Headlining his returners is 5-11 senior Maritza Navarrete and 5-4 junior Yassmin Soto, both of whom were starters last year. They will be joined by likely starters Chelsea Barry, a 5-7 senior, and a pair of promising freshmen -- 5-5 Bridget Crandall and 5-5 Keyanna Sauvain.

Only two other seniors are on the roster for Crandall -- 5-8 Tiffany Hanson and 5-3 Marci Cotter.
