In efforts to keep from breaking traditions, organizers have stretched this year's Beef Empire Days festivities over the course of three weekends.
The culinary carnival of 41 years always begins the first weekend after Memorial Day — the last Monday of May — but the PRCA Rodeo does not take place until the first full week of June is complete, local organizers said.
"We could have started a week later, but we didn't want to screw up our schedule or screw it up for others," said Deann Gillen, vice president and member of the Beef Empire Days board of directors. "Everyone knows we start right after Memorial Day, and we wanted to keep it that way."
The PRCA Rodeo, which begins Thursday, June 11, carries the Beef Empire Days' name, but the professional cowboy association is its own entity and sets its own program days, Gillen said. The two became separate organizations five years ago, she added.
Beef Empire Days returns to its two-weekend program next year. 2012 is the next year event organizers anticipate stretching the program over three weekends again, they said.
