Duplicate bridge

A 30-board Howell movement was played Oct. 27 by members of the Garden City Duplicate Bridge Club, producing 21 games, a majority in no-trump, and a single failed slam. Wen Wurst and Jon Craig claimed first place with a 58-percent game. May Craig and Jon Kempton were second, one-half point ahead of J.D. and Rusty Farr.

Tuesday's session saw one of two slams made, but only 17 games bid and made. Irene Bryant and Dorothy Bartlett took first place with a 58-percent game. Faye Anderson and Pat Barber tied with Roberta Renick and Shirley Klotz for second place.

Regular games begin at 7 p.m. Monday and 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Senior Center, with all bridge players welcome. For partners, call Kempton at 276-2876.

Senior Center pinochle

Charles Maxfield won high in the three tables of Senior Center pinochle played Wednesday. Neva Maxfield took second place. Third went to Betty Schreibvogel.

Phi Sigma Alpha

Sandy Rogers was hostess for the 11 members of Phi Sigma Alpha meeting Oct. 9. "What I like about fall" was the topic for roll call.

The minutes for the September meeting were read by Hazel Jones, secretary. Treasurer Joanne Harder reported a balance, with one bill presented by MaNon Evans. She also read a "thank you" card from Amanda Stinematz for the support and food after the death of her mother.

Members discussed the next movie they planned to enjoy and whether to make quilts for Christmas this year.

The birthday honoree was Marilyn Wadel.

Rogers gave the devotions from the book "Come Thirsty" by Max Lucado. Titled "If God Wrote You A Letter," the lesson included a story about a shoebox of gifts with a letter inside, but it would do you no good if you didn't open the box to reveal the contents.

Bernice Robinson opened her program with the prayer "It Is Well With My Soul." She shared details about Israel, noting that the YMCA is a very famous landmark there. She visited Bethlehem and the Sea of Galilee, said security was very tight in Israel, and showed pictures from an album she had put together.

The next meeting will be Nov. 13, with Ellen Eichorn as the hostess.
