Rainy day delight: Wet conditions don't damper Shootout

It was almost three hours after they were supposed to tee off due to early morning rains at the Telegram/Fry Eye Associates Ladies Shootout on Wednesday at The Golf Club at Southwind. But the consensus response was: What rain delay?

"Actually, my buddy and I just took off to Wal-Mart to get a bunch of stuff for the week," said Colby Myers from Phoenix, who won the professional part of the shootout with a 65. "Our other buddy, who was sitting there waiting around, bless his soul, called us up and told us we were teeing off in like 10 minutes and we hightailed it back to the golf course. I didn't even think about the delay, because we were distracted."

The delay didn't seem to bother the amateur teams either as four teams tied for the top score of 66 with the team of Ardis Fry — of Fry Eye Associates — her daughter-in-law Jena Fry and Jena's cousin Laura Starnes.

"We weren't too nervous about it and just waited it out," Starnes said. "It was actually kind of nice because I got a bunch of work done before we teed off, so it was less stressful. It was kind of nice."

Not only did people not take much notice to the delay, but they didn't seem to see much of a difference while playing on a soggy course.

"It wasn't too bad out there," Jena Fry said. "But there was a time I thought I was going to hit into some water. You know when you get something to aim at, you aim at it. So I was getting paranoid that I was going to hit that. But I didn't, I cleared it."

The Fry team won the event in which Ardis helped co-sponsor by a scorecard playoff. The team birdied the seventh hole — the No. 1 handicap — which was the deciding factor in their favor.

"It really was fun," Ardis Fry said.

The representative for the other main sponsor of the shootout — The Telegram's editor and publisher Dena Sattler — also finished in the money with her teammates Jill Durst and Melinda Harrington as they finished with the round with a 66 but lost a scorecard playoff on hole No. 10 to second-place team of Kim Elpers, Paula VanNorden and Sheryl Dick.

The team of Fry, Fry and Starnes admitted the play of their pro, Brian Noonan, helped in leading to their finish at the shootout. Noonan shot a 67 to finish second in the professional field with Boyd Summerhays and Bryan Novoa finishing tied for third with a round of 68.

"We had a really great pro," Ardis Fry said. "We really liked him. (Laura) is great, but we're not really good players."

Starnes added of Noonan, "I'm sure his back was sore. We used a few of his birdies — like when we hit clear onto another hole where it was some place we couldn't find it."

For Myers, the event served as another practice round before competing in the Pro-Am this weekend — something he was glad to have an opportunity to do.

"It definitely helped the confidence level," Myers said. "I've been playing good and been making putts. I had a slow start today — shot a 1-under on the front — and then I shot 5-under on the back in which I made five birdies in a row. I birdied from like 12 to 17, or something like that. So it definitely helps the confidence heading into this weekend."
